Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT
What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy CBT?
CBT is a skill-oriented therapy that helps patients learn to engage in more adaptive thinking, leading to healthier behaviors. It also helps patients understand how life experiences contribute to their view of themselves, others, and the world. These experiences keep individuals engaged in destructive patterns that can be identified.
Thinking may also be distorted due to depression, anxiety, or other psychiatric issues, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy provides skills for patients to recognize inaccuracies in thoughts and beliefs.
As a therapist specializing in addiction, I have seen the benefits due to the practical nature of the skills learned with this form of therapy. Patients learn to recognize, manage, and change thoughts that typically lead to destructive behaviors. These skills have helped patients prevent future relapses and manage underlying psychiatric disorders that affect an individual’s ability to remain sober.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Addiction Treatment
At Inspire Malibu, we know that an important aspect of effective addiction treatment includes empowering clients to see themselves in partnership with their physician and strengthening their physical, emotional, and mental health.
As the disease of addiction impacts the thought processes, Inspire Malibu utilizes Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as an essential aspect of effective individualized addiction treatment. CBT is a form of psychotherapy that emphasizes the critical role of thinking in how we feel and what we do.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Approaches
There are several approaches to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy based on the premise that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things like people, events, or situations. They include:
- Rational Behavior Therapy
- Rational Living Therapy
- Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy
- Cognitive Therapy
- Dialectic Behavior Therapy
Even if a situation remains unchanged, how we respond to that situation can change. We can choose our response and make a conscious decision to respond in ways that are in the best interest of our health and happiness.
Effective Treatment Therapy For Behavioral Health
Inspire Malibu uses Motivation Enhancement Therapy (MET) in conjunction with CBT. MET has been thoroughly researched in the field of substance misuse, most especially with young people. It has proven exceptionally effective at enhancing an individual’s motivation to change their behavior positively.
An effective treatment must help clients address, identify, and describe the personal meaning of their addiction. Are they self-medicating, filling up an inner emptiness, numbing feelings related to a trauma, or all of the above?
Unless clients understand what they are doing on a deep level, they will chronically relapse. A responsible, comprehensive treatment program considers all aspects of the ongoing health and well-being of the client, and that is part of our daily routine at Inspire Malibu.
In addition to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Motivational Enhancement Therapy, we incorporate the Stages of Change with Dialectical Behavior Therapy and One on One Therapy to provide successful addiction treatment.
