Inspire Malibu is proud to be an ASAM-designated addiction treatment facility. The license granted by the State of California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) is extended to Inspire Malibu for Detoxification and/or Recovery and Treatment Planning for individual, group, and educational sessions.
The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) level of care designations for our treatment center have been designated for male and female patients for the following levels:
- 3.1 Clinically Managed Low-Intensity Residential Services
- 3.5 Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services (Adult Criteria)
Inspire Malibu License Number: 190729BP
What is The ASAM Criteria?
The ASAM Criteria is a set of guidelines for clinicians that standardizes treatment planning and integrated care for patients, which was developed by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM).
The guidelines were prepared by renowned addiction and mental health doctors and professionals as a set of criteria to be followed for the care and treatment of substance abuse issues.
Instead of viewing a patient according to a single medical or psychological “condition,” The ASAM Criteria takes a holistic view and considers all aspects of a patient’s life including risks, root causes of problems, needs, and contributing factors when creating a treatment plan.
Instead of using a cookie-cutter approach used by many treatment programs, The ASAM Criteria favors individualized treatment and views each person and their situation as unique.
The goal is to provide a spectrum of care that follows multiple levels to provide the most appropriate care for each individual based on their needs.
What are the ASAM Levels of Care for Inspire Malibu?
The ASAM Criteria uses a continuum of an early intervention level followed by four additional levels of service based on each patient’s needs.
Inspire Malibu’s ASAM designation license is extended to the following levels:
3.1 Clinically Managed Low-Intensity Residential Services
ASAM Level 3.1 is called “Managed Low-Intensity Residential Services.” This level of care provides 24-hour living support and structure for at least 5 hours of clinical service a week with trained personnel.
Level 3 residential services include co-occurring services, which are staffed by mental health, addiction treatment, and medical personnel providing 24-hour living support services.
Inspire Malibu was founded by Dr. Mohammad, who was board-certified in addiction medicine and psychiatry. He is uniquely qualified to provide the level of care outlined in The ASAM Criteria and oversees an experienced staff to provide an excellent continuum of care for all of our patients at this level.
3.5 Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services (Adult Criteria)
ASAM Level 3.5 is known as “Clinically Managed High-Intensity Residential Services.” This level is designated for adolescents or adults, but Inspire Malibu’s designation covers adults.
Level 3.5 provides 24-hour care with trained counselors to stabilize multidimensional imminent danger and prepare for outpatient treatment. Patients in this level are able to tolerate and actively utilize therapeutic communities. Like Level 3.1, this level includes all of the same co-occurring services and staffing.
ASAM’s Six Dimensions of Multidimensional Assessment
The ASAM Criteria uses the six dimensions of assessment when creating an individualized treatment plan for each patient. These dimensions are also used for patient placement services. The six dimensions are as follows:
- Acute Intoxication and/or Withdrawal Potential.
- Biomedical Conditions and Complications
- Emotional, Behavioral or Cognitive Conditions and Complications
- Readiness to Change
- Relapse, Continued Use or Continued Problem Potential
- Recovery Environment
Assessment is critical when deciding the most effective treatment plan to follow for each individual patient. All dimensions are considered when deciding on placement and levels of care needed to begin treatment.
By following The ASAM Criteria, patients and their family members can be assured that they will be given the most effective and appropriate treatment available to ensure the success of recovery.
It is an honor to be recognized as an ASAM-designated addiction treatment facility. It recognizes that the evidence-based model we adhere to puts us in category of being a premier provider of addiction and mental health services.
