Merry, Berry, Bright, & Sober
With the holidays just around the corner, many who have taken the path of sobriety are anxiously worrying about how they will refuse temptations and continue saying no.
Whether you have chosen to be sober as a personal choice or for health reasons, there are a variety of strategies one can employ to make the experience less daunting.
A communication researcher at NC State, Lynsey Romo, conducted a study where successful professionals who abstain from alcohol were interviewed. Gathered are a few ways in which you can resist temptations without drawing attention to yourself, as suggested by these surveyed business professionals:
- If possible, do not announce that you do not drink, as this will only bring attention to yourself and make it more challenging to resist temptations. Instead of saying, “I don’t drink,” try with something such as “I’m not drinking tonight. I am the designated driver.”
- Keep a nonalcoholic beverage in your hand so that you are not urged to give in to temptations. This may mean ordering a non-alcoholic beverage that resembles a cocktail, such as a club soda with lime or asking the bartender to make you a mock cocktail.
- One aspect that makes many sober individuals feel uneasy is making their colleagues or friends feel uncomfortable by their sobriety. Rather than feeling like you are guilt-tripping your friends, simply offer to be the designated driver or buy everyone a round of drinks. This is a great way to be still involved in the fun but remains sober.
- If you are feeling a little pressure, try using a health-related reason to eliminate the drink requests. For example, saying you are on antibiotics and are unable to drink will likely get them off of your back.
As challenging as it may be to find a place for yourself in many social environments with your newfound sobriety. If there is a will, there is a way. Just as you have overcome your addiction and found a way to be happy again without being dependent on drugs or alcohol, you can overcome this obstacle as well.
