What’s the Difference Between Inpatient and Outpatient Addiction Treatment?
Inpatient, or Residential Treatment, offers comprehensive care, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including room and board along with recovery services such as group and individual therapy, medication management, cognitive behavioral techniques, and other recreational activities.
Outpatient Addiction Treatment Programs, on the other hand, typically have clients coming from around the community to enter into a program for a specific amount of time per week. The outpatient programs are mainly group oriented for continued treatment after completing a residential program or a period of sustained sobriety.
Residential (inpatient) clients stay at the facility for the entire duration of their treatment, but outpatient clients go home every day and only spend part of the day at the treatment facility.
Who is the Ideal Candidate for Outpatient Addiction Treatment?
For people who have had a period of sustained sobriety, an outpatient program is usually a better fit. The main purpose of outpatient treatment is to prevent a relapse. An outpatient program may have 3 to 6 hours of group therapy per day depending on the person and program.
People being discharged from an inpatient program are ideal candidates to enter an outpatient facility to help stay on track.
Others who are able to manage daily life but realize they are struggling with a substance abuse problem can also find outpatient services to be beneficial. They don’t necessarily require around the clock attention or detox, but definitely need guidance to avoid having the problem escalate.
Inpatient care is most appropriate when a client is acutely struggling with addiction and along with other therapeutic services (groups and therapy).
The ideal client for inpatient treatment is one who struggles with maintaining sobriety and is frequently relapsing. Clients who need detox or are unable to successfully stay sober on their own would benefit from inpatient treatment rather than outpatient care.
Clients with dual diagnosis (mental illness like acute depression, bipolar, or anxiety combined with substance abuse) who need intensive individual therapy would also benefit from inpatient levels of care.
How Long is IOP?
Recovery differs from person to person. Addiction is a chronic disease and needs long-term management. Relapse is a common risk factor that all patients must face, and the outpatient program helps clients manage life stressors that occur.
The outpatient program also serves to monitor the client’s recovery once they have completed a residential program.
While some people need a progression of inpatient to outpatient to aftercare maintenance, others may only need an outpatient program followed by a maintenance program such as SMART Recovery.
Successful addiction treatment requires an individual plan, as no two people are alike, and each has different needs. The best approach is determined after a thorough assessment by a qualified addiction specialist.
Outpatient Treatment Programs
Outpatient programs differ by the intensity of the program and the number of hours each day dedicated to therapy.
At Inspire Malibu, the Intensive Outpatient Program is 3 hours of treatment per day for 3 days a week.
The Partial Hospitalization Program includes 6 hours of group therapy per day for 5 days a week.
Group therapy includes skills training, relapse prevention, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, and motivational enhancement therapy.
A qualified addiction specialist trained in the various therapies leads each session. All of our therapists are caring and compassionate professionals, who strive to build trust and never pass judgment. We stress that there is no shame in seeking help for an addiction.
The length of stay, whether outpatient or inpatient, is determined by a variety of factors and each individual’s personal history.
There isn’t a standard amount of time recommended, however inpatient treatment typically begins with 30 days of treatment. While outpatient treatment can be on a more long term basis depending on the client’s level of urges, length of sobriety, other support systems, etc.
Best way for each individual to work with the clinical specialists and medical team to determine the progression of the treatment and best ways of moving forward. There are many after-treatment options available and the team can decide what will work best.
Outpatient Drug And Alcohol Treatment Center
An outpatient treatment center offers many of the same services as an inpatient or residential treatment center. Except that patients do not stay at the facility overnight for weeks or months at a time.
Not all users are alcoholics or addicts and in need of intensive long-term treatment. However, all problem users are at high risk for medical problems and social consequences.
At Inspire Malibu, we would rather “prevent” addiction than treat addiction. We address all problems related to excessive, immoderate use of alcohol, intoxicants, and/or recreational drugs.
Our outpatient treatment uses the same proven techniques to reduce harm, increase awareness, and stimulate decision making abilities to change, or even save the lives of our patients.
A consultation with the professional staff at Inspire Malibu, will start the process of receiving comprehensive personal care custom crafted to each individual’s exact needs.
Some of the outpatient addiction treatment services in Los Angeles include:
Individual Outpatient Addiction Treatment
For some patients, their need is best met by outpatient consultation, medication where required, and learning new life skills available from Inspire Malibu.
For others, intensive treatment is most appropriate. To find out what is the best approach, a personal diagnosis of each individual’s condition and concerns is the true first step.
Why Choose Outpatient Addiction Treatment Over Inpatient Treatment?
Outpatient treatment is more cost effective than treatment at a hospital or inpatient residential care (rehab). The goal is the same for both, successfully medically and mentally to stabilize clients and refer them to the next level of care.
Many patients will need intensive outpatient treatment to continue their recovery.
If the addiction is not life threatening, or the patient is able to maintain stable work or family commitments, outpatient treatment will work better into the daily or weekly routine without disrupting the normal routines.
