TBI Recovery with Photobiomodulation Therapy
TBI Recovery with Photobiomodulation Therapy: What to Expect
Photobiomodulation therapy using low-level laser therapy (LLLT) has been found to be an effective technique for improving the recovery of patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Numerous studies conducted in the US, UK, and other countries have demonstrated the positive outcomes of PBM.
TBI refers to a disruption in brain function or evidence of brain damage caused by an external factor. Even individuals with mild TBI can experience long-term disabilities. These disabilities can manifest in various ways, including cognitive impairments such as difficulties in learning, executive function (including working memory), verbal fluency, reaction time, perceptual organization, attention, verbal and visual memory, as well as emotional symptoms like depression, anxiety, fatigue, sleep disorders, and attention deficit. These symptoms can significantly impact a person’s daily functioning, work, and personal life.
LLLT has been shown to have several beneficial effects, including increasing neurogenesis, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and nerve growth factor (NGF). It also reduces inflammation, decreases free radicals and oxidative stress in the brain, improves blood flow and circulation (including within the frontal cortex), alleviates pain by increasing natural opioids and pain relievers in the body, increases oxygen consumption in the frontal cortex, and boosts serotonin levels.
At Inspire Malibu, we incorporate PBM and other brain stimulating therapies in the treatment of TBI. The treatment process begins with comprehensive medical, neurological, and psychiatric assessments, along with appropriate imaging techniques and EEG brain mapping to evaluate brain activity. Based on the evaluation, our healthcare professionals determine the most suitable biomodulatory therapies for each patient, taking into consideration their preferences and needs.
